🌎 Story of the Day:
A new plan to destroy forever chemicals instead of regulating them could favor industry over public health.

📖 Quote:
Both offer the appearance of meaningful action while allowing industry to continue to profit and pollute at the expense of public health.

"Ram Raghavan started researching ticks more than 16 years ago when he learned that a 7-year-old child died from Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a tick-borne disease. His daughter was 7 years old too, and he believed – and still does – that nobody should die from a tick bite."

"Some public health specialists told ABC News that monitoring travel exposures is an important part of containing and tracing the spread of a disease.

However, they warned that broader bans can have unintended consequences that may negatively impact global public health and hinder containment efforts that should be considered when making these decisions."

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, under Trump Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has quietly removed a federal public health webpage offering explicit safer-sex and harm reduction guidance for mpox. The deletion confirms fears among LGBTQ+ health experts that the Trump administration is once again illegally scrubbing medically vetted information tied to queer communities from government websites."

the current ebola outbreak is such a tragedy... and every time i read something about it, i think about the gutting of USAID and the evisceration of CDC and how the US pulled funding from WHO.... and all the death that could have been avoided.... and all the hard work of the people in those institutions who spent decades setting up global public health measures...

Meanwhile on the #Ebola front, the Democratic Republic of Congo ( #DRC ) is experiencing what is now the 2nd worst #EbolaOutbreak on record, and it promises to get worse…a lot worse. This virus strain is rare, which is part of the problem. There is no vaccine yet. The outbreak is worsened by several factors, including: armed conflict in the area; geographic isolation; lack of contact tracking; and finally, the loss of USAID $$ necessary to support prevention and outbreak support. So the #TrumpRegime is at least partially responsible for this #PublicHealth disaster. #Africa

Vaccines teach our immune system to recognise and fight specific germs—no infection needed. 🌱

- They’re rigorously tested for safety.
- Different formats exist (live‑attenuated, mRNA, protein subunit, etc.).
- Widespread immunisation cuts disease spread, protects the vulnerable, and eases strain on health systems.

“I’ve been organizing for 15 years, and it’s always been the case that women are leading our fights,” said Danny Cendejas, a campaign specialist for MediaJustice, who works with grassroots movements across the country that are opposing data centers. “We are definitely seeing everyone join the fight, but we have to recognize the truth, and it’s women, trans, queer and nonbinary people leading the work.”

"The DRC’s Ituri and North Kivu provinces, the outbreak epicenters, have been compromised by international aid cuts and armed conflict that has led to significant displacement.

"Another challenge is distrust of outside authorities and the spread of misinformation, which led youths to torch a hospital in Ituri province yesterday after authorities refused to release to the body of a local football player who died of suspected Ebola.

"To combat misinformation, volunteers from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are going door to door advising people in Mongbwalu on how to protect themselves and when to seek care."

"For now, what are most alarming are not the outbreaks themselves but the slow and uncoordinated responses by the institutions that Americans rely on to keep them safe, including the U.S. government and the World Health Organization. If the world cannot properly handle known threats that it has contained before, then it is dangerously unprepared for the next novel one."

The Ebola outbreak erupting from the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to escalate wildly, with cases nearing 750, deaths reported at 177, and around 1,400 contacts now being traced, the World Health Organization reported in a press briefing Friday. The latest numbers already place the outbreak as the third largest on record, though it was only first reported a week ago, on May 15. And WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the outbreak is still “spreading rapidly.” #ebola #EbolaOutbreak #DRC #Africa #Virus #Virology #PublicHealth
