The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola spreading in central Africa is a distinct species from the Zaire strain that existing approved vaccines target. A claim submitted to IsItCap this week asks whether the current vaccines can stop it.

The Ebola outbreak erupting from the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to escalate wildly, with cases nearing 750, deaths reported at 177, and around 1,400 contacts now being traced, the World Health Organization reported in a press briefing Friday. The latest numbers already place the outbreak as the third largest on record, though it was only first reported a week ago, on May 15. And WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the outbreak is still “spreading rapidly.” #ebola #EbolaOutbreak #DRC #Africa #Virus #Virology #PublicHealth

Molecular evolutionary analysis of the lineages leading to the current MV Hondius Andes virus outbreak

This is an informal analysis and is not intended as a formal preprint or manuscript in its current form.

The aim of this analysis was to estimate the timing of the closest sampled common ancestors to the lineage leading to the current outbreak and to characterise mutations accumulated on the stem branch leading to that lineage.

Overall, our results support a rodent-reservoir source within Andes virus diversity and place the closest sampled/common ancestor of the current outbreak lineage in approximately the late 1990s in the most informative M segment analysis, with a broader and older estimate from the S segment.

Initial genomes from May 2026 Bundibugyo Virus Disease Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, reveal a new spillover event

On 15 May 2026, the Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, DR Congo (DRC) officially declared a Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) outbreak in Ituri province, DRC. This represents 17th Ebola outbreak in DRC and the second #Ebola outbreak caused by Orthoebolavirus bundibugyoense (BDBV) species. After the 2007 outbreak in Bundibugyo, Uganda, and the 2012 BDV outbreak in Isiro, DRC, the ongoing outbreak is the third documented BDV outbreak.

The three newly generated #BDBV genome sequences from Uganda (one) and DRC (two) were analysed in the context of 34 BDBV genomes from the previous outbreaks in 2007 and 2012 downloaded from Pathoplexus.

The virome refers to the vast, complex, and heterogeneous collection of all viruses that are found in or on an organism, or within a specific environmental ecosystem. To truly comprehend the sheer scale of this biological "dark matter," one must examine the staggering numerical reality of viral abundance.
