On Sunday, May 24th, before dawn, a missile fell on the bed where they were sleeping, in an apartment in Nuseirat, Mohammed Ibrahim Abu Mallouh, 38, his wife Alaa Majdi Zaqlan, 36, and their six-month-old son Osama. The three were killed instantly. Six other daughters of the couple survived. Uncle Yehia told Reuters that the bodies were found “cut to pieces,” without warning.

Palestinian agencies announced the names on Sunday morning. The Israeli army remained silent. On Monday, May 25th, twenty-four hours later, the Israel Defense Forces claimed: Abu Mallouh was a “central figure” in the production of weapons for Hamas. They state they used “precision munitions” and “preventive measures to reduce civilian casualties, including aerial surveillance.”

The statement remains silent about the civilian deaths. The 36-year-old wife is not mentioned. The six-month-old infant is not mentioned. The word “precision” coexists in the same sentence with the bed of a mother and her child.

Nickolay Mladenov, Senior Representative of the Board of Peace, defined the peace plan “paralyzed” on May 13th. Healthcare officials in Gaza, cited by Reuters on May 24th, speak of approximately eight hundred Palestinians killed since the ceasefire began on October 10th. Hamas, in a statement on May 26th via Asharq Al Awsat, speaks of over nine hundred. On the same Sunday as the Nuseirat raid, according to Al Jazeera, Israeli Navy ships opened fire on fishing boats off Gaza City, wounding three fishermen.

The IDF statement remains in effect: “Measures to reduce civilian casualties, including aerial surveillance.” Under aerial surveillance, Osama Abu Mallouh was six months old.

Medicines, privatization, and business. Why another medicine is needed
Our Constitution recognizes the protection of health as a universal right and guarantees care to the indigent. But today, the ability to get treatment increasingly depends on the size of an individual’s wallet. Daily, we hear reports of long waiting lists and citizens who forgo treatment, but rarely do we go beyond the headlines, searching for the causes and responsibilities behind this situation.
Healthcare, from cure to assistance and medications, is today one of the world’s largest markets, involving major industrial groups and financial funds. A small group of pharmaceutical companies, Big Pharma, has the monopoly, in the West, on the production of medicines; TRIPs agreements on patents prevent millions of people from accessing care. The attempt to build a public pharmaceutical company of European size was immediately opposed. Prevention is reduced to the bare minimum.
In Italy, the weight of private healthcare is constantly growing; but public and private healthcare have opposing goals, the first grows on health, the second on illness.
The book, intertwining the local and global dimensions, addresses several planes: from the consequences of the dismantling of the NHS and the penetration of the private sector into public health to possible forms of activism and the strategies necessary to regain the right to health.

The reality of healthcare in Canada, specifically British Columbia:

My daughter just had a scheduled c-section due to complications that prevented a vaginal birth. She had a midwife, a GP, a GYN, and obstetrician, and her husband all part of the birth process.
The operating room had all the usual medical personnel, including a specialist brought in at the last moment to inspect an unusual circumstance during closing. She received a spinal and was awake for the procedure. She was assigned a two-bed room where her husband was allowed to stay with her the whole time.

The baby was in-room although with constant nursing support so that they could both sleep. Her husband was not included in the meal plan but was allowed to snack on any food in the small kitchen down the hall which was stocked with sandwiches, etc. Her hospital stay was for 3 nights.

She was given extensive breast feeding support, temporary formula supplement for the baby, constant post operative care with pain medication and the baby had all the usual lab tests plus extra for being a small baby. The baby was sent home with a stack of tiny diapers, as well. She has constant followup post natal care and monitoring.

All of this was and is FREE. (even the parking is free at this small town hospital) Everything was included in our healthcare services that is paid for by taxes that everyone pays on a sliding scale. Canada is not broken. Canada is a wonderful place to live.
