In Japanese, one word used for "ugly" is "busu" (γ€Œγƒ–γ‚Ήγ€). (It really should go without saying that this is an offensive word, and not to be casually slung around other people!) How this word came to be is a rather fascinating look in the history of a notorious plant poison.

Japanese monkshood (commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Aco…) is a plant with showy flowers and a very toxic alkaloid. The poison in monkshood is potent enough that the Ainu used it to tip their arrows for hunting bears and other game. Dried monkshood root is called "busu" (γ€Œι™„εγ€); in a diluted form, it was often used for its anesthetic, numbing qualities.

πŸ’§πŸ§¬ Aquagenic urticaria is an extremely rare condition where #skin contact with #water triggers painful hives.

Researchers believe a substance on the skin reacts with water to release histamine. Interestingly, those affected can still drink water safely because their internal digestive systems don't trigger this specific immune response.

🚜🧬 Researchers compared two similar communities with different #farming techniques to study immune system development.

#Amish #children who grow up around traditional manual farming show a much lower risk of #allergies than #Hutterite children who live on modernized industrial farms. The study suggests that early exposure to diverse environmental #microbes found in barns helps train our immune system to ignore harmless allergens.

πŸ₯±πŸ§  Researchers at #Durham University analyzed #ultrasound #videos to track how often fetuses yawn during different stages of #pregnancy.

The findings indicate that yawning frequency decreases as the #fetus grows, suggesting the behavior is a necessary part of maturation for the central nervous system. Unlike adults, fetuses don't yawn because they're tired or because they see others doing it.
