The correct answer here was…. 55% of member states (so 15 out of 27) representing at least 65% of the EU population.

Qualified majority is the voting system most frequently used in the Council, with about 80% of all EU legislation adopted through it.
This is because a qualified majority applies when the Council takes decisions under the ordinary legislative procedure, which is the primary decision-making process for adopting EU laws.

In the Council of the European Union, where the EU Member States meet, decisions are often made by what we call "Qualified Majority Voting", or QMV. How many votes are needed to pass a law under QMV?

(In the interest of shortening answers: MS= Member States, pop=population)

#EPSOprep #EULaw #EU #EUCouncil #EPSO #StudyWithMe

  • 55% of MS representing 65% of EU population (35%, 32 votes)
  • 65% of Member States (2%, 2 votes)
  • 65% of MS representing at least 50% of EU pop. (38%, 35 votes)

Most of you got the answer right!
There are in fact more steps to the European Citizen initiative, but this is all I could fit in the short poll field of Mastodon.
Before you even launch an initiative, you have to find 7 EU citizens living in 7 different EU countries to join your cause.
Once the initiative is registered for voting you need 1 million signatures from at least 7 EU countries, and a minimum threshold in those.
All the steps are listed here:

@technik @s1m0n4
Sure, here's an overview: european-union.europa.eu/insti…

Some context that I explained at the start of this #EPSOprep series:
I am studying for an exam about the EU, that would allow me to become a civil servant. It's called the #EPSO, which stands for European Personnel Selection Office.
This year they are organising the first exam for "generalists" since 2019, and 170k people signed up. So I am making content out of my efforts to prepare, so sometimes I get real niche...

This is a fun one, that I chose for a reason! All three names exist in the EU bubble!
The EU Commission’s Directorate General for Oceans and Fisheries is called DG MARE.
The council meets under the name AGRI*FISH*
But in the European Parliament? It’s the PECH committee!
You can’t make this stuff up, really!
Gotta love #EU Affairs!

#EPSOPrep

Here another #EU general knowledge question for you:

The European Parliament works in committees, that usually have four-letter names that are abbreviations or portmanteaus or short words relating to their subject matter. For example, the constitutional affairs committee is AFCO
(AFfairs Constitutional).
What is the name of the committtee that handles oceans and fisheries?

#EPSOprep #EPSO #EuropeanParliament #StudyWityMe #EuropeanStudies

  • MARE (52%, 50 votes)
  • FISH (8%, 8 votes)
  • PECH (16%, 16 votes)

I really need this extra time! So far I've only prepared for the reasoning tests.

"#EPSO has finally shared the next #AD5Graduates update: the first testing sessions will start in autumn 2026. Exact dates have not been confirmed yet, but October is looking like the most realistic timing for many candidates to plan around."

Looks like you'll get to #StudyWithMe until October. More #EU quizzes, more #EPSOprep

Another #EULaw question today: There are three sources of EU law: primary law, general principles of EU law and secondary law.
What is secondary law made up of?

The correct answer here is:
The European Commission!
Normally the Commission puts forward a legislative proposal, and then it goes to the Parliament, who makes amendments and votes on passing it or not. After that it goes to the Council for a final vote.

However, the Parliament can call on the Commission to make a legislative proposal. An example of this is “the right to disconnect ” which Parliament called for and Commission is now working on.

The correct answer is… 🥁
9th of May is the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration.
More about that here: european-union.europa.eu/princ…

What I find kind of funny is that this always really triggers the Russian trolls. See, we celebrate the end of WWII on 8th of May, but because of time difference, the Russians celebrate their victory day on 9th May.
And we always get a bunch or Russian trolls on the EU socials about this matter.
