Is there a realistic path forward for a #digitalEurope that is different from the hostile dystopia engineered by US #bigtech ?

It is unclear, but on this #europeday some thoughts and speculations on whether European #digitalsovereignty is a pie in the sky or something that might actually happen.

First, digital society is built on silicon stuff. In hardware, Europe is at best a small part of a US dominated supply chain. This means debilitating, eventually terminal long-term dependency.

If the techbros think that gazillion GPU's running algorithms which control and manipulate the population from oversized datacenters are the future of silicon, that is is the future we get in Europe too.

There is no escape from this future, aside from designing and manufacturing your own silicon. Which is what China does.

Which could take a decade for Europe to do, if everybody put their minds to it right now, which is by no means a given.

NB: Its not to imply that #gpus and accelerated computing (vectorising matrix-multiply) is incompatible with a human-centric digital landscape.

#Algorithms are powerful stuff, that is why they need to be in the service and control of society, or as the cliche goes: empowering all individuals, not just the #techbros

This constrains the manner in which algorithms are developed and deployed, and ultimately what kind of silicon we need.

Europe Day is the perfect moment to reclaim our digital space and make it truly European, open and democratic. 🇪🇺
Like the European project, the Fediverse is built on diversity, cooperation and solidarity, not monopolies and surveillance capitalism. 🤝
That is the spirit of European NetDynamics: an independent, community‑driven node where you own your data, control your identity and help build a real European digital public sphere. 🌍💪
