This is what we want to see, so let's scrap the #ageverification hysteria, chat control, encryption and hardware backdoors, and trying to make VPNs look "sus". Oh, and the digital omnibus undermining GDPR protections!

Privacy isn't just about privacy in our relationships with private service providers, it's ALSO about privacy in our relationship with states or state actors. The ARF of the EU #digitalID is actively undermining the latter.

Age verification is IMO discrimination and ageism and grossly tramples the basic human and constitutional fundamental right to freedom of expression and seriously impinges upon the ability to socialize. I think it's an authoritarian attempt to prevent people from rightfully and freely organizing and exchanging ideas.

If you are serious about this, start regulating platforms.

Instead of subjecting everybody to "verification" processes that lock adolescents out. Processes that merely enable platforms and their "partners" to collect more and more data about #EU citizens, destroying even the tiny bit of privacy that is still left.

To someone who has seen a lot of this over the years, it was entirely predictable.

Indeed, I predicted it, less than a day before the first age dæmon (first mentioned in the very thread headed by my initial prediction), and a few days before the #systemd one.

The next progression of events will be apologists saying that this is entirely severable from systemd, and Linux-based operating systems can patch it out of their packages; and then some desktop environment making it a mandatory dependency.

I haven't been keeping track. That might have already happened.

You can't have both "your data, your control" and mandatory ID checks plus content scanning infrastructure.

Shops ask for proof of age when buying alcoholic beverages for single use only. They don't request, retain, process or share a copy of your passport, address, contact details or any other personal information to use in own benefit.

You would not allow the shops to take a copy of your ID, the same like you would never give Apple a copy of your ID for the pretext of "age verification"

Then don't make a damn app and leave parents and kids alone. It is that simple. You could instead:
- Raise awareness of privacy and security issues for kids (and users, in general).
- Educate kids in schools about responsable use of electronic devices.
- Just ban roblox and other pedo-infested platforms. Seriously. Predators don't hide in signal DMs precisely.
- Start reducing dependency on foreign private digital platforms that ARE out of your control and don't care about sanctions.
- Invest more resources on secure and free software that you can actually control.

For the record I never installed the Covid app you talk about in the link.

And I am also a parent. There's a simple way not to have kids on social media: give them a dumbphone instead of a smartphone.
And set up parental control on their devices.

If you wanted to do something meaningful you should have regulated all services and telecom providers to include advanced rules for parental controls.
